AFRICA MEMORY STICK,

Photographer Sam Nzima is famous for the photograph of Mbuyisa Makhubu carrying Hector Pieterson's body away from the rioting crowd at the student protest on 16 June 1976. Nzima was the grandfather of SHARON NZIMA (19), a second-year Interior Design student. She says he definitely influenced her career choice. Here she has a look at the iconic photograph.

I AM Tshiamo Moleele (18), REPRESENTING Generation Z (BORN FROM 1995 -). I SPEAK English AND MY FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM IS YouTube. I HAIL FROM Midrand, Gauteng AND COMPLETED GRADE 12 through home schooling (GED Academy). I AM STYDYING Music, Faculty of Arts & Design AND STAY WITH my parents. MY STUDIES ARE FINANCED BY my parents. I am not THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY TO ENROL AT UNIVERSITY. I CHOSE TUT AS MY ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE it provides quality education. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 6/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY making sure that students can properly access online registration so that there is no hassle of waiting in long queues every year. The University can also improve the way it poses questions on the registration website. It becomes complex and frustrating when one doesn’t understand it. I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY OWN PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY CAN ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST-YEAR BY providing academic assistance when I need it. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we are lazy and sensitive. Yes, some of us feel that our opinions are the only ones, but we are very understanding of other views as well. My generation is full of passionate dreamers. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS singer, Bon Iver BECAUSE his music has touched my soul like no other artist. On days I need to be uplifted and encouraged, his music instantly makes me happy. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO BECOME the musician I’ve always wanted and deserved to be.

I CHOSE TUT AS
MY ACADEMIC
HOME BECAUSE
it provides quality

education.

I CHOSE TUT AS MY
ACADEMIC HOME
BECAUSE of the
recommendations I got
from friends, family
and the Internet.

I AM Pheto Molekoa (19), REPRESENTING Generation Z. I SPEAK Setswana AND MY FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM IS Facebook. I HAIL FROM Hammanskraal, Gauteng AND COMPLETED GRADE 12 AT THE Hans Kekana Secondary School. I AM STUDYING Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment AND STAY AT Muzinda residence in the Pretoria CBD. MY STUDIES ARE FINANCED BY NSFAS. I am not THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY TO ENROL AT UNIVERSITY. I CHOSE TUT AS MY ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE it is the best academic institution. There are lots of activities that the institution provides to students to grow in addition to academics. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 9/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY encouraging staff to start working earlier, perhaps at 7:00 to avoid long queues. I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY OWN PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY CAN ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST-YEAR BY providing extra classes, additional information about the course I chose and its career paths. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY IS that university requires a lot more responsibility. Here you make your own choices. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we lack ambition, don’t think, and we suffer from peer pressure. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS my mother BECAUSE she has the ability to guide me when I lack guidance. She motivates me when I need motivation. EACH SOUTH AFRICAN CAN DO HIS/HER BIT TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN BY encouraging the youth to live healthy lifestyles. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO BECOME an inventor. I want to create my own inventions related to water processing to turn sea water into drinkable water without salt.

I CHOSE TUT AS MY

ACADEMIC HOME

BECAUSE it is located in

an area where there is

no lack of newsworthy

events that I could

possibly write about.

I AM Augustro Letsitsa Moloi (23), REPRESENTING Generation Z. I SPEAK Sesotho AND MY FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM IS Instagram. I HAIL FROM Phuthaditjhaba, Free State AND COMPLETED GRADE 12 AT THE Thokoana Mataota Secondary School. I AM STUDYING Information Technology, Faculty of Information & Communication Technology AND STAY IN Soshanguve. MY STUDIES ARE FINANCED BY my father. I am THE FIRST ONE IN MY FAMILY TO ENROL AT UNIVERSITY. I CHOSE TUT AS MY ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE of the recommendations I got from friends, family and the Internet. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 7/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY extending registration until March every year for those that stay far to be able to register. I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY COULD ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST-YEAR BY providing free study material. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY IS that schools do not enable growth and freedom. University encourages independence and more self-study. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we are spoon-fed. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS my father BECAUSE he takes care of me as well as my siblings. He is the breadwinner at home. EACH SOUTH AFRICAN CAN DO HIS/HER BIT TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN BY not getting involved in crime and substance abuse. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO BECOME a Software Developer.

I AM Zusive Xanywa (19), REPRESENTING Generation Z. I SPEAK isiXhosa AND MY FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM IS Facebook. I HAIL FROM Lady Frere, Eastern Cape AND COMPLETED GRADE 12 AT THE Ntsonkoha High School. I AM STUDYING Journalism, Faculty of Humanities AND STAY IN Roodepoort. MY STUDIES ARE FINANCED BY NSFAS. I am THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY TO ENROL AT UNIVERSITY. I CHOSE TUT AS MY ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE it is located in an area where there is no lack of newsworthy events that I could possibly write about. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 9/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY updating their computer systems from time to time. I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY OWN PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY CAN ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST-YEAR BY providing more information about my course and inviting successful people working in industry to give us advice. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY IS that classes are conducted differently. University exposes you to a new world and lifestyles. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we live life as if it will never end. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS my mother BECAUSE she is a hard worker and a business woman who encourages young people to stay true to themselves at all times. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO BECOME a highly-ranked television news anchor.

I CHOSE TUT AS MY

ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE

it is the best academic

institution. There are lots of

activities that the institution

provides to students to grow

in addition to academics.

I CHOSE TUT AS MY

ACADEMIC HOME

BECAUSE it offers a lot
of interesting courses

which I have not seen

available at other

institutions. TUT is close
to home and I’m familiar

with Pretoria.

I CHOSE TUT AS MY

ACADEMIC HOME

BECAUSE I wanted to be

as far as I could from

home so I could grow in a

different environment

with different people

from different places.

I AM Mandisokuhle Dlamini (19), REPRESENTING Generation Z. I SPEAK Isizulu AND MY FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM IS Whatsapp. I HAIL FROM Kwa-Nongoma, Kwazulu-Natal AND COMPLETED GRADE 12 AT THE Phumanyova Technical School. I AM STUDYING Sports Management, Faculty of Management Sciences AND STAY in res at the Soshanguve-North Campus. MY STUDIES ARE FINANCED BY NSFAS. I chose to study Sports Management, among others because of the excellent sport facilities. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 8/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY specifying registration dates for each course. This could reduce long queues. Two or more registration points for each course could also help. I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY OWN PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY CAN ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST-YEAR BY putting us in touch with alumni of the same course who have made it out there. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY IS that nobody forces you to do anything here. We don’t wear uniform and high schools don’t offer learners free transport. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we consume too much alcohol, lack concentration and that we are lazy. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS my friend (Zwelinhlanhla Ndwandwe) BECAUSE he encourages me to work hard in everything I do. He offers me advice when I lack motivation. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO be a TV Sports Analyst Referee.

I AM Naledi Selesho (19), REPRESENTING Generation Z. I SPEAK Sepedi AND MY FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM IS Instagram. I HAIL FROM Nkangala, Gauteng AND COMPLETED GRADE 12 AT THE Cullan Combined School. I AM STUDYING Kinesiology and Coaching, Faculty of Science AND STAY IN Pretoria Central. MY STUDIES ARE FINANCED BY NSFAS. I am not THE FIRST PERSON IN MY FAMILY TO ENROL AT UNIVERSITY. I CHOSE TUT AS MY ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE it offers a lot of interesting courses which I have not seen available at other institutions. TUT is close to home and I’m familiar with Pretoria. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 9/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY monitoring its online registration process regularly, encouraging staff to be friendlier so that they can be easily approached, and providing signs that could assist students with directions to registration points. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY IS the method of studying. University requires a lot of self-study and critical thinking. You have to take responsibility for your own choices. The environment also requires independence. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we think everything should be given to us on a silver platter, in other words, that we don’t have to work for anything. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS my late mother BECAUSE she was strong, hard-working and worked tirelessly to ensure that we have all that we have now. She passed on her generosity to me and my siblings. EACH SOUTH AFRICAN CAN DO HIS/HER BIT TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN BY working together to try and reduce the high level of gender-based violence that our country is currently facing. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO BECOME a Radiologist.

I CHOSE TUT AS MY ACADEMIC HOME BECAUSE academically, TUT produces the best results by Auditing students. I am privileged to be a student here because we get the opportunity to access reading material for free on Campus and have very friendly lecturers. I WOULD RATE THE REGISTRATION PROCESS 8/10. IN MY OPINION THE UNIVERSITY COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS BY allocating online registration dates to each Faculty for students not to queue on Campus the whole day. I KNOW I HAVE TO DO MY OWN PART, BUT THE UNIVERSITY CAN ASSIST ME TO MAKE A SUCCESS OF MY FIRST-YEAR BY introducing Saturday classes and weekly mentor classes. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY IS schools do not provide free access to Wifi and do not have a Website where students can access notes, marks, or receive additional information. THE MAJOR MISCONCEPTION PEOPLE HAVE OF MY GENERATION IS that we’re uneducated and lazy. THE PERSON WHO HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON MY LIFE IS my mother BECAUSE she never fails to remind me that I should always remain goal-orientated and motivated. EACH SOUTH AFRICAN CAN DO HIS/HER BIT TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE IN BY bringing an end to corruption, getting the youth educated and by reducing nepotism. AFTER COMPLETING MY STUDIES I WANT TO BECOME an External Auditor.
